WRITE FOR DEVOKIDS

How to Write a Devotion

Hey, kids! Writing devotions is easy and fun and when you follow this four-step process. Try it out!

1) HOOK - Every good story has a surprising line or paragraph that shocks the reader or makes a bold statement. What do you do when you fish? You hook the fish. It's the same thing with a story.

FOR EXAMPLE: "I'd had it. I couldn't take any more of my younger brother's pranks."
Now that's a HOOK!

2) BOOK-Book tells the reader in a simple story or example what the scripture means to the writer.

3) LOOK-Look is how we get the reader to see how the Bible can help us with our problems... even problems like younger brothers.

4) TOOK-What the reader takes away from the devotion: something to learn, remember, apply in their own lives.

It rhymes! Hook, Book, Look, Took

Let's try writing one together.
(First, we place our scripture)
"Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God's wrath." - Romans 12:19

(Begin with a Hook)
"I'd had it. My brother had pulled his last joke. He was going to pay for it, BIG TIME! I grabbed a frog from the creek and waited for my little brother to close the door to the Porta-John.

(Add in the Book)
All week Dean had been soaking me with his Zipper-1000 water-blaster. He'd hide on the upstairs patio or behind mom's van, which he knows he's not supposed to get close to becasue last summer he accidently sprayed white paint all over the hood. Anyway, this morning I opened the screened door and zap. Right in the face. So I asked Dean if he thought getting me wet was fun. He laughed. He was still laughing when I chased him through our neighbor's yard and across the vacant lot where the homeless man sleeps. He laughed all the way down to the creek. He was even laughing when he jumped in and swam to the other side where the road crew is buidling a new road.

When the frog landed on his head while Dean was in the Porta-John, though, he stopped laughing.

(Sprinkle In the Look)
Sometimes being mad is okay. The Bible says Jesus got mad. It says he kicked over tables and yelled at the people for bringing birds and cows into church. Our pastor would get mad about that, too. He doesn't even like it when I come in with muddy shoes. So I guess it's okay to get mad.

But then mom showed me that being mad at Dean wasn't the same as getting mad because there was a cow in church. She says we're supposed to forgive people. Even people like my stupid brother. (Mom didn't call my brother "stupid." I added that part because mom doesn't know all the dumb stuff Dean does.)

(Finish with the Took)
Tonight when Dean came into the backyard I handed him his Zipper-1000 water-blaster and told him to shoot me. He didn't. He shot dad, instead. Dad fell out of his hammock and I think he was about to hollar at Dean, when I yelled, "Leave room for God's wrath."

"And ice cream," Mom said, scooping strawberry ice cream into bowls.

Yes, and ice cream.

More to Read

What is a Devotion?
A devotion is a very short story that teaches the reader something unique and special about getting to know God. Devotions help us study the Bible one verse at a time and they help us learn to focus our thoughts on God. That's why a daily devotion is a very important thing in our Christian lives.

Begin with Prayer
Writing a devotion begins with a simple prayer from the heart. "God, help me tell someone about your love today." Now it's your turn; Choose a Bible verse and build your devotion.
